Before the official opening of the 9th Festival of Tolerance, the public has the chance to see several exhibitions organized as a part of the Festival.

From April 2nd, on numerous locations in Zagreb, at public transport stops, you will notice black and white photographs in city lights, ’1945 – 1995 – 2015′ by the artist Tarik Samarah. With this photograph he marks the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz and the 20th anniversary of the genocide in Srebrenica. Have we learned anything from history?

From Friday April 10th we present two photographic exhibitions in Glypthotheque HAZU – a photo essay ‘Prince Soniyiki – integration of a refugee into Croatian society’ and ‘Intercultural encounters’, presenting photo-contest photographs.

From Saturday April 11th in the Italian Institute for Culture in Zagreb, Italian photographer Donata Pizzi presents series of photographs on the topic of intolerance in today’s world, in her exhibition ‘Intolerance Zero’.

On Sunday April 12th, we will officially open 9th Festival of Tolerance – Jff Zagreb with screenings for ticket-holders only in the Europa Movie Theater; ‘Wiener Blut’ by Croatian directors Zlatko Bourek and Pavao Štalter and ‘Walesa: Man of hope’ by the Academy Award winner Andrzej Wajda.

In Tuškanac Movie Theater, the program starts at 5 PM with screenings – free and open to the public!

01_ALIVE INSIDE_Photo Courtesy of BOND360Program starts with the multiple award winning documentary ‘Alive inside’, an emotional story about Music and Memory. (Audience Award, US Documentary-Sundance Film Festival, 2014; Best Documentary, Boston Film Festival 2014, Best Documentary, Fort Myers Beach Film Festival 2014, to name just a few of awards).

At 6:45 PM another award-winning film follows, ‘Her name is Lotte’, a story about true friendship that can triumph over terror and death. The film is inspired by the childhood of Charlotte Knobloch, the Vice President of the World Jewish Congress.

 

 

 

Film ‘Colette’, based on the novel by Arnost Lustig, one of the world’s most renowned literary authors of our times, continues the program. It’s a stroy about the power of love and determination of young lovers to survive the hardest of times, in the Auschwitz Concentration camp. Director and writer of the film Milan Cieslar will attend the screening, and the public will have a chance to talk to him on Q & A after the film.COLETTE VINARICE 0002

We will close the program of first day of the Festival with the film ‘Sound of torture’ which starts at 9:15 PM. Meron Estefanos is a Swedish-Eritrean radio host. She broadcasts the program about the kidnaps of Eritrean refugees in the Sinai Desert from her home in Stockholm, and following a story, she ends up in Sinai.
