Review of the Educational Mornings 2009 – 2014
The Jewish Film Festival Zagreb Association started producing the Educational Mornings program in 2009 in the framework of the 3rd Jewish Film Festival. The third edition of the Festival was dedicated to “Children – Victims of the Holocaust”, and Educational mornings that were held during the Festival followedthetopic. Through the medium of film, which isfamiliar to students, we provide them with an opportunity to have a deeper, visual and more emotional insight in history and the curriculum .
Former lecturers at the Educational Mornings:
Branko Lustig
President of the Festival of Tolerance and a renowned film producer. During his long-standing career, he won numerous awards (including the Academy Awards and the BAFTA Awards for “Schindler’s List” and “Gladiator” together with theEmmy Award), as well as acknowledgements (honorary doctorate of the University of Zagreb, honorary citizenship of the City of Osijek). He also produced a number of well known films, such as“American Gangster”, “Black Hawk Down”, “Hannibal”, “The Peacemaker”, “Sophie’s Choice”. Lately, he is notably engaged in education of youth throughout
Croatia, and especially soin the framework ofthe Educational Mornings where Mr.Lustighas been lecturingfor the last five years.
Andreas Maislinger
Founder and director of the Victims of Holocaust Memorial Service. He is an Austrian historian and political scientist, founder of the Braunau Contemporary History Days, member of the founding
committee of the Austrian-Israeli society “Tirol”, former professor at the University of Innsbruck, University of New Orleans, Humboldt University of Berlin, and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, who was, together with Mr.Lustig, awarded with a Lifetime Achievement
Award at the Annual Dinner organized by the Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust. In 2005, Maislinger received the Decoration of Honour in Silver for Services to the Republic of Austria. He was one of thelecturers at the Educational Mornings in 2010.
Frank Stern
Austrian professor of film, modern German history and culture, Director of the Center for German and Austrian Studies at the University of Beer-Sheva, lecturer at the Faculty of Historical and Cultural Studies of the University of Vienna, former guest professor at the Universities of Columbia, Georgetown and Berlin and outstanding authority in the field of Judaism. He isthe author of numerousacknowledgedbooks, and he initiated the Vienna Jewish Film Clubin 2008. He was a lecturer at the Educational Mornings in 2011.
Johann Chapoutot
Award-winning French specialist of the history of National Socialism and lecturer at the University of Pierre Mendes-France in Grenoble. He holds an MA in German Language and Political Sciences and a PhD in History. Mr.Chapoutot wrote four books and numerous academic articles, and is a member of the Institut Universitairede France. He was a lecturer at Institute of Political Sciences in Paris and Harvard University. For his book “The Death of Weimar”, he received an award for his work by the Academie Francaise. He presently teaches law and morality of the Third Reich, trying to understand how violence and murder can become a legal and moral imperative. He was a lecturer at the Educational Mornings in 2012.
Mirko Ilić
Graphic designer, illustrator and lecturer. In 1995, he established MirkoIlić Corp. in New York, a multidisciplinary studio specializing in graphic design, 3D animation, and illustration. Before arriving to the U.S., MirkoIlić art directed numerous posters, record covers and books all overEurope. In 1991, he was the art director of the international edition of Time Magazine. He became the art director of the New York Times Op-Ed pages in 1992. Formerly, he gave lectures at the Cooper Union and presently he teaches at the School of Visual Arts. Lately, he excels with his lecture titled “Symbols of Hatred”, which heheldat the Educational Mornings in 2013.
Terence Pike
UNHCR Representative in Croatia since 2011. He was born in Zimbabwe.After six years of juridical career, he joined the UNHCR organization in 1992. As a UNHCR officer, Mr. Pikeworked in some ofthe most threatened refugee regions inthe world, like Ethiopia, Indonesia, Zambia,Pakistan, Tanzania, Kenya and Malawi. He has been participating as a lecturerat the Educational Mornings inZagreb for four years now.
Aleksandar Ajzinberg
Architect from Belgrade who was forced to hide for the most of WW2 because of his Jewish roots. For the most part, Ajzinberg’s war story reminds of a film, which will be screened in the framework of this year’s programme. Mr.Ajzinberg will also hold a lecture with many photographs from his youth in order to present the early years of his life: from the moment his father was taken to a concentration camp to his escape from a prison together with his mother, three years of hiding in the mountains of Homolj and the publication of his book titled ‘Letters to Matvej’. Ajzinberg was awarded for the book by the Association of Jewish Communities in Serbia in 2006. Five hours of his recorded testimony is archived at the USC Shoah Foundation. Mr.Ajzinberg held a lecture at the Educational Morning organized in Belgrade in 2014.
